First steps
Your first class starts with showing up.
A little preparation, an open mind and room to make mistakes. Here is how to ease into your first visit.
Choose a starting point that feels right
You do not need a perfect routine or a dance background to take your first step. Start by reading the class title, level and teacher on the schedule. If you are unsure whether a session is a good fit, ask the team before booking.
An all-levels class welcomes a range of experience, but the pace and style can still vary. Tell your teacher that it is your first visit so they understand where you are starting.
Keep your preparation simple
Wear clothes that let you move comfortably, bring water and leave yourself time to find the studio and settle in. Check with the team about footwear or anything specific to your chosen class.
- Check the date, start time and class level before you travel.
- Keep your booking details handy for check-in.
- Ask questions when a step or instruction is unfamiliar.
Give yourself permission to learn
Learning a sequence can feel unfamiliar at first. Focus on one part at a time: the rhythm, the direction or a short phrase of movement. Missing a step does not mean you are falling behind; it gives you something concrete to practise.
Take the class at a pace that works for you. The goal of a first session can be as simple as trying something new and finding a movement you enjoy.
Find your next reason to come back
After class, notice what you liked. Was it the music, the style, the teacher or learning alongside other people? Use that as a starting point for your next session. You can return to a familiar class or explore a different style when you feel ready.
